[Current Mood | grateful]

I've been trying to get some creative stuff made in the midst of all that's happening. It's hard to know what to write here, it seems frivolous compared to what so many people are going through. But when I start making stuff, it's so mellowing -- I'm sure you know what I mean. Here are some little dudes that went out for an order

And here's a wonderful surprise that just appeared on my doorstep!

random goodies [Jul. 28th, 2005|11:58 am]

[Current Mood | excited]

While away, I managed to be kind of crafty and made a couple more bats for people. A pouch and a very mini snappy patch. I should have taken a picture holding it. I think it was about 1 1/2 inches across.

One of the greatest used bookstores in the world is right near my Mom's. I'm rarely in a place where I turn down old craft books and mags, but there were so many, I would have needed a small U-Haul to bring them back. Here are the ones I got

And two books by Jean Ray Laury: A Treasury of Needlecraft Gifts for the New Baby; and Quilts and Coverlets. In the first, I found this awesome pattern for a nursery quilt (couldn't find a color picture)

I love it so much! I've never made a quilt, so I'm going to need lots of help from you wise quilters. The head and face are appliqued, and I'm not sure how much extra to cut out around the shapes, how to sew them on without frayed edges, etc. If you have some advice, please share! I also found this cute quilt in the second book

Overall, it's a little too busy for my taste, but I'm in love with a few of the blocks--especially the apple, whale, and mushrooms. I chose some very cute fabric while I was home and Mom is working on a quilt for the little one. I didn't want "gendered" colors, so I picked turquoise, orange, purple, yellow, and a light green. I wish I had thought to bring swatches of each back with me to post here, but I'll share a picture of the quilt once it's done! Yay!

My sweet hubby (Max) is taking me away on a special trip this weekend for my birthday. Hopefully I'll find a few more crafty goodies. Have a great weekend! Oh, and here's my tummy at about 16 weeks. I'm showing--finally!

travels with bat + bird [Jun. 10th, 2005|12:31 pm]

[Current Mood | chipper]

These two are starting off on different journeys. This is my first turquoise bird pouch, and I like how it came out. I don't know why but it kind of reminds me of Jimmy Stewart. yes, I'm weird today.

And here are a couple more little magnet paintings I just finished.

cream puff

and the back of an orange tiger kitty, inspired by Noah as he goes nutty watching the birds through the window.
Hope you have a great weekend!

one last bat (for now) [May. 27th, 2005|01:32 pm]

[Current Mood | jubilant]

I hope you're not too tired of seeing bats. This will be the last one for a while. Here's a teensy weensy one that I crocheted with embroidery floss. I like how it turned out, but it wasn't easy (to put it mildly).

I got an order for a cuff with a very scary bat on it and this is what I came up with.

Have a great holiday weekend and pray for good weather!

Here's mama bat and her colorful little babies getting ready for their big journey. The handbag is about 8 inches tall and 7 inches wide.

There she goes with the babies safely tucked inside.

A few more mini-magnets I've been having fun painting.

bats + yummy dishes [May. 24th, 2005|09:15 am]

[Current Mood | peaceful]

I got a special order from someone I met at [info]nightwings to make some bat pouches in different colors. It's been so fun making a rainbow of very scary bats!

Last time I was visiting my mom, we went through my old toys and I shipped some to myself that I'd missed over the years. These pots and pans have always been some of my favorites.

I remember filling all of them with water and making the most exquisite gourmet meals. Every course was a different and unique spin on, um, water. I also used them in my mudpie-making days.

Looking at them closely, there are tons of chew marks, and no, they're not from a dog. '70s plastic is super yummy!

yummy yarn + happy dishes [May. 12th, 2005|08:48 am]
[Tags|, , ]
[Current Mood | happy]

I don't remember where I found a link to this amazing lady's yarn, but I'm so glad I did! I found one of the most brilliant color combinations I've seen.

I love the murkiness mixed in with all the bright cheery colors. Before I show what I made with it, let me show you this very cute transfer I found ("animated dish motifs") from Aunt Martha's.

I love their faces! Now, I know you're all on the edge of your seats....

here's the t-shirt I transferred it to along with the shrug I made with that beautiful yarn.

So fun to wear! I made up the pattern and it's very simple if you'd like to try.
I knitted the shrug in seed stitch on size 50 straight needles. Cast on 16. Row 1: K1, P1, K1 (repeat to end); Row 2: P1, K1, P1 (repeat to end). Repeat these two rows until the entire piece measures 35 inches. The cast on edge should measure 10-11 inches, depending on how blousy you want the arms. Lay the piece flat and fold in half lengthwise. Stitch the two edges together, 10 inches on each side (this creates the "arms" of the piece). The section that hasn't been stitched lies flat against your back when on.
Using such big needles left quite a bit of yarn -- enough to make a little scarf -- yay!

This stuff just went up at pixelgirl shop!

She recently added lots of cool new stuff. Please check it out. Thanks!

[Current Mood | gloomy]

How often do I get a chance to quote Frank Booth from Blue Velvet? Just had to do it. The dark day today inspired some black stuff. Here's a new knit stitch I learned today -- "lacy mock cables"

Very little light made it hard to take a good close up of the stitch pattern on what I made.

Here's the new cuff I made with it, adorned with big fat cherries

and another mini-magnet

solomon's knot [Apr. 19th, 2005|01:53 pm]
[Tags|, , , , ]
[Current Mood | good]

Here's a new crochet stitch I learned today. I thought it looked a lot harder than it turned out to be. It's called "solomon's knot" and I crocheted it with size 10 cotton thread.

It's a little too floppy with such thin thread. I'll try it again with a bigger hook and yarn.

If you haven't been here yet today, Hillary posted some awesome books and was so generous to share a great place to find them for less $$ than usual. woo hoo! great news :)

Here's an amazing and beautiful book I found at Book Off last time I was in the city.

I haven't figured out how to search the isbn to see if they have it at yesasia, but here it is if you're interested: 4-579-10764-0
It's filled with really stunning crochet patterns inspired by antique (mainly 1920s-'40s American) motifs.

Some happy news....

these guys will be at magpie near Boston soon! I can't wait to visit the store--it looks so fun!

cashmere + bats [Apr. 14th, 2005|12:24 pm]
[Tags|, , , , ]
[Current Mood | busy]

I've been so busy trying to get an order finished that I haven't been able to learn a new stitch this week -- crap. And I won't be able to work on anything for fiber friday tomorrow -- two craps. But, I'm going on a fun adventure, starting tonight. YAY!

I made this choker from a thrifted gray cashmere sweater, sewed little ribbons on as ties, and the flower is made from a thrifted silk blouse.

It's oh so soft on!

Here's my finished (woo hoo!) bat bag. Crocheted with 100% cotton, he's a bit bigger than the other headphone bags I've made.

I also decided to include a drawstring closure on this one -- made with i-cord.

And his headphones are removable -- in case he just needs to chill.

I hope you have a great weekend!

big bat + japanese goodies [Apr. 12th, 2005|02:57 pm]

[Current Mood | ecstatic]

YAY! My battery's all juiced up again!

Here's a new handbag I'm working on. A big freakin' bat!

Here are some goodies from my weekend spree.

A glass with happy bunnies and bubbles,

a cute little "clickety clack" case, and two elephant hooks.
The case is so funny -- printed under the three pictures of the yellow bunny, reads:
"My name is Rinda. Favorite food is the white cake and the sweet cherrys. Verry nice."
Love it!!
Got lots of stickers, notebooks, and craft books too. yee haw :)

cherries + fruity bats [Apr. 7th, 2005|10:55 am]
[Tags|, , , , , ]
[Current Mood | good]

Here's the new stitch I learned this week. It's a knit stitch called "vertical eyelet rows", which isn't too catchy, so I think I'll call it "ghosty" 0__0

Knitting the stitch with small thread creates kind of a mock cable look that I really like. Here's a light lime green cuff I made with it.

A girl would just feel naked without some fruity fun

A couple more little bat pouches I just finished.

Thanks to everyone who liked them and encouraged more! It means a lot to me that you like what I'm making!

Here's another drawstring pouch I just finished.

I like bats a lot, but they really freak me out. They can fly, crawl, and wriggle through holes that are dime-size. This one's a little too chubby to do that, thank goodness.

Posing with his treasure egg.
